Leadership requirements for the Harvard and Stanford MBA
Why do so many MBA candidates with impressive statistics miss the mark and get denied by Harvard Business School and Stanford?
I want to share with you something that I see MBA candidates do wrong again and again. And I want to give you a tool to help you avoid making this same mistake.
Here’s what happens when you, my dear MBA hopefuls, embark on your MBA application journey.
You instinctively gravitate towards the class profiles of your dream schools.
It's natural to fixate on how your GPA and GMAT or GRE scores stack up.
All you have to do is look at the frenzy of profile evaluations in the online forums and you will see how often it’s reduced to these hard metrics.
However, if your sights are set on the very top MBA programs like HBS or Stanford GSB, overemphasizing academic credentials and test scores could be a critical misstep.
Why? Because the secret to unlocking the doors of the most selective MBA programs isn't just about numbers.
Drawing on my insights as a former Dean of MBA Admissions, let me share with you the true essence of what and how the top schools evaluate in candidates.
Prepare to shift your mindset towards a strategy that could significantly elevate your MBA admissions odds!
Consider this: top institutions proudly highlight their class profiles, which undeniably influence their rankings.
Schools take tremendous pride in their class profile and the class profile is directly linked to their position in the various rankings.
But I am here to tell you it’s equally important for you to take a minute and also read the school’s mission statement.
Let’s go to the HBS one for a second: “We educate leaders who make a difference in the world.”
Do you see a mention anywhere of “we educate leaders with a median GMAT score of 730, ideally ones who have a 3.8GPA”? Nope.
And what about the GSB?
“Our mission is to create ideas that deepen and advance our understanding of management and with those ideas to develop innovative, principled, and insightful leaders who change the world.”
So here's my crucial advice as you begin your MBA application journey: the core mission of MBA admissions committees is to identify leaders who embody the school's vision for impactful leadership in business and society.
And if this is where their mission is, this is where your focus should lie.
But how do these MBA programs assess and evaluate your MBA leadership track record?
Harvard Business School calls it “A habit of leadership”. They seek “experiences born through hard work and humility, experiences that actively involve others in meaningful conversations.”
The Stanford GSB, a school that firmly believes that “past actions are the best predictor of future actions” wants to learn “how you have created positive change in the organizations and communities in which you have been involved.”
Understanding how to interpret these evaluation criteria and how to demonstrate the qualities HBS and the GSB look for is where so many MBA candidates stumble.
And the worst part is that this happens not because they don’t have these qualities!
It happens because they overlook a crucial step: deep self-reflection.
The real challenge lies in needing to thoroughly mine their experiences for leadership gold.
They miss an opportunity to capture the essence of their leadership story and turn it into a powerful narrative in their MBA application.
It's this pivotal process of capturing your raw, personal leadership stories that often goes underutilized, leaving your true potential uncommunicated.
How do you avoid making the same mistake?
The most important step you should take right now is assessing your leadership for your MBA application.
When I work with MBA candidates, one the most important steps I take at the very start of our work is to review and assess their own “habit of leadership” and how it stacks up.
But working with me 1:1 is not possible for everyone.
In order to help as many candidates as possible benefit from my experience, I have created the “MBA Leader Check” – an assessment that helps you benchmark your leadership experience to understand how it aligns with the expectations of the very top MBA programs.
And this assessment goes well beyond benchmarking!
It helps you gain personalized insights into your leadership journey, highlighting areas where you excel and opportunities for further growth.
It comes with actionable recommendations - practical advice on articulating your leadership story, directly supporting your MBA application.
Whether you're just embarking on your leadership journey or have a wealth of experiences, the "MBA Leader Check" offers valuable perspectives on your readiness for an MBA and how to elevate your candidacy.
It’s based on real MBA AdCom insights and it distills your leadership experiences into a clear, actionable profile.
Whether you're aiming for Harvard, Stanford, or another prestigious MBA program, understanding and articulating your leadership experiences is the most pivotal step your need to take in your MBA application.
Once again, here's the link to the assessment! I can’t wait to see how you get empowered by capturing and distilling your own
Onwards and upwards,
